Wow, that’s a great compliment, thanks! And some really good additions– I haven’t seen “Year” or “Absence” in a while, I need to rent them again…

A couple more that no one has mentioned: Mel Gibson’s character in “The Year of Living Dangerously” and Sally Field in “Absence of Malice” (the most REALISTIC movie ever made about newspaper journalism — trust me on that).
Also, in Citizen Kane, I’ve always liked the guy who played the actual reporter researching Kane’s life. It’s a small role (I don’t even know the actor’s name), but it’s the key to moving the narrative along.

Some others I really liked (in order, top to rest):
Howard Beale (Peter Finch): Network*
Babe Bennett (Jean Arthur): Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (original)
Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston): The Killing Fields
Macualay Connor (Jimmy Stewart): The Philadelphia Story
Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck): Roman Holiday
Amy Archer (Jennifer Jason Leigh): The Hudsucker Proxy**
Jean-Dominique Bauby (Jean-Pierre Cassel): The Diving Bell & The Butterfly***
The dudes in Airplane! who (a) take some pictures and (b) go barreling into the group of phone booths. Those guys are great.

Truth be told, I can’t stand Will Farrell, but I still really enjoyed Anchorman. Credit Apatow?

*Technically not really a journalist? I dunno. Prophetic as hell anyway.
**Clearly riffing on Jean Archer’s Babe Bennett, but that made me appreciate it all the more.
***Technically an editor, but did document his life-story within the movie and there was a real book from it. Anyway, I loved this movie. So there.

Hildy is a no-brainer, but not even a mention of Kathleen Turner’s turn as an updated version the character in Switching Channels?

Have to say I’m a little disappointed some of honorable mentions didn’t make it into the list. Lois & Clark, Murrow, and William Miller all seem deserving (and how about Lester Bangs from Almost Famous, too?).

The Academy has always been a sham!!! Nice list. Also check out the last season of the Wire.

Very good list. I’ve just Netflixed Shattered Glass because I’ve wanted to see it for a while now. Despite my indifference to the movie of Fear and Loathing, Thompson’s character must be included in the list.
